A Snake in the Helmet
The discovery was made when coaches and teammates noticed an unexpected movement behind the padding, revealing a roughly two‑foot cottonmouth snake coiled inside the protective gear.
Cottonmouths, known as one of Arkansas's most venomous pit vipers, are second only to a few other species in toxicity, making the encounter especially alarming.
Remarkably, the athlete wore the helmet for nearly an hour before the reptile was uncovered, and he escaped without a bite, a stroke of luck that left both players and staff shaken.
Local animal services technicians arrived on scene, coaxed the snake out with a stream of water and later released it into a nearby wooded area, ensuring it would not pose further risk.
A Call for Vigilance
The head coach used the incident as a teachable moment, urging all players to routinely inspect their equipment for anything from insects to larger threats before stepping onto the field.
The Maumelle Animal Shelter echoed the warning, noting that snakes and other critters can slip into dark, enclosed spaces such as helmets, shoes and bags, and that quick checks can prevent dangerous encounters.
