A New Era for the Youngstown Phantoms
The Youngstown Phantoms have appointed Nathan Paetsch as their new head coach, installing the former professional defenseman as the seventh man to hold the position in franchise history.
Paetsch arrives after a playing career that spanned 167 NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets, complemented by stints in the AHL and European leagues.
His coaching résumé includes two Calder Cup championships with the Grand Rapids Griffins, a tenure as a development coach for the Buffalo Sabres from 2020 to 2023, and three seasons as an assistant with the Rochester Americans, the Sabres’ AHL affiliate.
Coaching pedigree and player development
During his time in Rochester he helped shape the development of prospects such as Noah Ostlund, Jiri Kulich, Konsta Helenius and Radim Mrtka, players who are now viewed as core pieces for the Sabres’ future.
Paetsch’s draft journey began when the Washington Capitals selected him in the second round in 2001, a path that ultimately led to a re-draft by the Buffalo Sabres in 2003 after a contract impasse.
President of Hockey Operations and Co-General Manager Jason Deskins praised the hire, citing Paetsch’s proven ability to nurture talent and his deep roots in the organization’s player-development pipeline.
The Phantoms hope the new coach will leverage his extensive experience to accelerate the growth of their own prospects, continuing the club’s tradition of producing NHL-ready talent.
