Hawaiʻi Pacific University announced this week that it will launch the state’s first collegiate women’s flag football team for the upcoming 2026 semester, marking a significant expansion of athletic opportunities for female students. The initiative follows a board decision that recognized the sport’s growing popularity among girls across Hawaiʻi.
A milestone for women’s athletics
The program will be led by Kanda Korver, who joins HPU after several years coaching at Kamehameha School Kapālama. Korver has spoken openly about the absence of flag football when she was a student‑athlete and sees the new team as a chance to fill that gap for the next generation.
Debbie Snell, HPU’s Athletic Director, emphasized that the addition of the team aligns with the university’s commitment to inclusive sports participation. Snell said the program aims to give young women another avenue to compete and thrive.
The effort also dovetails with a recent decision by the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education to designate flag football as an official high‑school girls’ sport in 2024, a change that has sparked increased interest at the youth level. Local clubs report a surge in enrollment, suggesting that the collegiate program could tap into a burgeoning talent pool.
Beyond the field, the initiative reflects a broader cultural shift toward expanding traditionally male‑dominated sports for women in the islands. University officials hope the model will inspire other institutions to consider similar programs, further diversifying athletic offerings for female students.
