Eisenhower High Cancels Varsity Football for 2026
Eisenhower High School in Decatur, Illinois, announced that it will not field a varsity football team during the 2026 season, citing a combination of low participation numbers and safety concerns as the primary drivers behind the decision.
The cancellation follows a 1‑8 record for the Panthers in 2025, which left the program with a limited pool of upperclassmen. While the varsity schedule is being scrapped, the school confirmed that its junior varsity squad will continue to operate, allowing younger athletes to remain involved in the sport.
Because the cancellation removes a scheduled opponent, the school faces the task of finding replacements, and the Illinois High School Association noted that rescheduling games for most teams is unlikely. If a substitute opponent is accepted, any resulting win would be recorded as an official victory, which could affect forfeit statistics.
Eisenhower’s move reflects a wider pattern across the Midwest and the nation, where declining enrollment and safety worries have prompted several districts to discontinue varsity football. Nearby Litchfield Senior High School made a similar announcement, and four Iowa programs canceled their varsity seasons in 2024, underscoring the growing challenge for high school football programs.
