A scheduling shuffle in the college football landscape
Texas Tech University has secured a 2027 home game against the University of New Mexico, moving to fill a scheduling gap created when North Carolina State pulled out of a previously arranged series.
The agreement, announced recently, places the contest at Jones AT&T Stadium on September 18, 2027, and includes a $1.2 million guarantee payable to New Mexico within 30 days after the game.
The deal comes as athletics director Kirby Hocutt continues to prioritize a robust home‑game slate now that the program’s new football facilities are operational.
Hocutt has already ruled out a road trip to North Texas, opting instead to negotiate a buyout that would see the Red Raiders compensate the Mean Green $1 million within 60 days of any future matchup. Meanwhile, the university is still hunting for a Power Four conference opponent to round out its 2027 schedule.
Historical dominance in the Red Raiders‑Lobos rivalry
The upcoming contest adds another chapter to a long‑standing rivalry that dates back to 1931.
Texas Tech holds a 37‑6‑2 edge over New Mexico, having won four straight meetings and 14 of the last 15. The Lobos entered the previous season with a 9‑4 record and shared the Mountain West Conference lead at 6‑2, underscoring the competitive stakes of the non‑conference showdown.
