At 38, Perron's NHL output has slipped dramatically; in 65 games last season he logged just 13 goals and 28 points while averaging a modest 13 minutes and 34 seconds of ice time per contest.
What still makes him attractive is a right‑shot that can thrive on the power play and a knack for linking up with top‑line centers. His chemistry with Tim Stülzle was evident when the duo outscored opponents 10‑3 in 5‑on‑5 situations, controlling over 60 percent of expected goals.
The Wild's current wingers include Maksim Shabanov, Bobby Brink and Yakov Trenin, while prospects such as Hunter Haight and Charlie Stramel are also in the mix. The team could replace the vacated spot left by Mats Zuccarello with Perron, using his experience to add depth without a hefty contract.
Because the Professional Tryout (PTO) season allows unsigned veterans to earn a roster spot on a trial basis, Perron represents a zero‑risk proposition. If he flashes the form that once made him a reliable second‑line contributor, the Wild gain a moderate‑upside player for minimal investment; if not, they can part ways without financial penalty.
