The University of Michigan announced this week that Bertram 'Buzzy' Caruthers will lead its player development efforts as the program’s new director.
A background in the Midwest
Caruthers began his coaching journey at Barstow High School in Kansas City, Missouri, before moving to Sumner Academy of Arts and Science where he taught for a year. He then climbed the ranks to become director of player development at Missouri State in 2022 and later at Nebraska through 2022, before returning to the Midwest as an assistant at Ball State in 2024.
New faces on the bench
Alongside Caruthers, the Wolverines welcomed Mike Martin and Dylan Murphy as assistant coaches. Both bring recent experience from Brown University and the Osceola Magic, respectively, and will share responsibilities in player growth and scouting.
A reshuffling of the staff
The moves follow the departure of Justin Joyner, Drew Williamson and Mike Boynton Jr., who left the program to take posts at Oregon State, the Dallas Mavericks and a head‑coaching role at another institution. Boynton’s exit cleared the way for his promotion to head coach earlier this summer.
International exposure
Michigan is slated to compete in a series of exhibition matches abroad, beginning with games in Lithuania and Croatia from August 21 to 29. The schedule will culminate with a homecoming showcase at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on October 25 against Houston, giving the new staff a chance to evaluate talent in a competitive setting.
