Jelani McDonald, a senior defensive back for the University of Texas, has been selected for the 2026 Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list, a honor that spotlights the nation’s top defensive backs heading into the upcoming college football season.
A milestone for Texas defense
The Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually by the Jim Thorpe Association, evaluates performance on the field, athletic prowess and demonstrated character, and has historically recognized Longhorns who have left a lasting imprint on the program.
McDonald’s inclusion follows a breakout 2025 campaign in which he topped the Texas tackling charts with 80 stops, including 49 solo, and recorded three interceptions, while also contributing 4.0 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.
His impact was especially evident in conference play, highlighted by a career‑high 14 tackles — five solo — and two tackles for loss in a road victory at Kentucky against Mississippi State, a performance that earned him preseason All‑SEC Third Team honors.
Beyond statistics, McDonald’s consistency is underscored by his 39 career appearances and 17 starts, and he is expected to anchor the Longhorns’ secondary when the season opens against Texas State on September 5 at Darrell K Royal‑Texas Memorial Stadium, a game that will be streamed on ESPN.
Texas shares the record for the most Thorpe Award winners with LSU and Oklahoma, each program boasting three alumni who have captured the accolade, a testament to the school’s defensive legacy.
