Karl Hobbs, a veteran of nearly four decades in college basketball, has accepted an assistant coaching position at Duquesne University, bringing a wealth of experience to the program.
Hobbs’ career spans stints at several prominent programs, including a tenure as associate head coach at Georgia Tech and a pivotal role at Rutgers University where he helped the Scarlet Knights secure back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament berths in 2021 and 2022.
A Proven Track Record
His earlier success at George Washington saw the Colonials capture two Atlantic 10 regular‑season titles (2005, 2007) and achieve a 24‑game home winning streak, culminating in an 88‑85 overtime victory over UNC Wilmington in the 2006 NCAA Championship.
At Connecticut, Hobbs contributed to the Huskies’ run to the 2014 national championship, a campaign that featured a dramatic win over Kentucky in the title game, and he had previously led the team to the Final Four as a player.
Known for his emphasis on defensive efficiency and player development, Hobbs has coached 14 NBA prospects, most notably 10‑time All‑Star Ray Allen, and he will look to apply those skills to elevate Duquesne’s defensive standards.
Duquesne head coach Dru Joyce III announced the hire, stating that Hobbs’ expertise in recruiting and strategic planning aligns perfectly with the program’s ambitions to compete at a higher level in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The addition of Hobbs is expected to strengthen the team’s recruiting pipeline, particularly in the Northeast, and to reinforce a culture of excellence that has defined Duquesne basketball over the years.
