A Breakout Season in Birmingham
John Paul Head emerged as the centerpiece of UAB Baseball’s offense during the 2026 campaign, slashing .329 with a .457 on‑base percentage and a .710 slugging mark that combined for a 1.167 OPS. His 22 home runs not only paced the Blazers but also placed him one shy of the program’s single‑season record set in 1998.
Head’s impact was most dramatic in a three‑game stretch against Middle Tennessee, where he went 9‑for‑14, launched six homers, added three doubles, scored ten runs and drove in ten more while stealing a base. That performance helped the team sweep the series and cemented his reputation as a clutch hitter.
National Recognition and Future Prospects
The sophomore’s surge earned him a No. 55 overall ranking in the 2027 MLB Draft by Baseball America, as well as nods as the No. 27 overall prospect, the No. 7 prospect among college players and the No. 4 college outfielder in the nation. Such placements reflect a blend of raw power and refined plate discipline that scouts have rarely seen at the collegiate level.
Beyond the collegiate circuit, Head continued to showcase his talent in the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he slugged three home runs in 14 games and posted a .718 OPS. The exposure to top amateur talent there further refined his swing and reinforced his status as a top draft prospect heading into the upcoming draft season.
