The Thief River Falls Amateur Hockey Association has been awarded a grant aimed at easing the financial burden that has long kept many families from enrolling their children in youth hockey.
In recent years, steep ice‑rental fees at two local arenas have created a barrier for parents, especially those with limited budgets, who wish to register kids between the ages of three and fifteen.
Funding that removes cost obstacles
The new funding will lower the price of ice time, allowing registration fees to stay affordable while freeing up budget resources for essential equipment upgrades.
Outdated or missing gear — such as helmets, gloves and elbow pads — will be replaced to ensure that every player can train safely on the ice.
Expanding access and capacity
With the additional financial support, the association plans to add a third hour of ice time, a move that could accommodate more than 105 youngsters, optimizing practice sessions that currently host 50 to 55 players per sheet.
Scholarships will be offered to families in need, preserving a low‑cost model that welcomes participants from all backgrounds and reinforces the program’s inclusive spirit.
The grant also signals a broader investment in youth sports within the district, promising growth, improved safety standards and a stronger pipeline for the next generation of hockey players.
The initiative is being coordinated in partnership with Minnesota Hockey and USA Hockey, the governing bodies that oversee amateur hockey across the state and nation.
