A Season of Transition
Last season the Arcata High boys soccer squad capped a dominant campaign by capturing the Humboldt‑Del Norte League championship, edging Fortuna 2‑0 in the playoff final after a 1‑1 deadlock on the road. The Tigers finished league play unbeaten at 9‑0‑3 and posted an overall record of 15‑3‑5, a performance that still resonates in the locker room.
This year the team must rebuild after losing seven seniors, among them co‑captains Cruz Aguilar, Jonah Morgan and Lars Gerdes. Their departures leave sizable shoes to fill, but head coach John Davidson remains optimistic, emphasizing the depth of the returning juniors and the work ethic of the newcomers.
The preseason schedule takes the Tigers to Santa Rosa and Oakland, where they will test themselves against a variety of opponents before league play begins. In an unsanctioned junior varsity circuit they will also meet Fortuna, Eureka and Del Norte, giving the younger players a chance to gain valuable minutes.
Despite the turnover, the league is expected to be tightly contested, with multiple programs capable of challenging for the title. Davidson notes that the competitive balance creates an exciting environment, but also demands that Arcata stay focused and adapt quickly.
