A Recruiting Maestro Returns to the Upstate
Riley Conroy has officially joined the Furman University men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach, bringing a proven track record of player development and recruiting to the program.
The former assistant at the University of South Alabama spent three seasons there, contributing to back‑to‑back 21‑win campaigns and helping the team capture its first Sun Belt regular‑season title since 2008. During the 2025‑26 season the Jaguars posted a 21‑12 record, ranked sixth nationally in field‑goal percentage defense and 17th in scoring defense, while guard Tyrell Jones led the squad in scoring, assists and steals before signing a professional contract.
Head coach Bob Richey expressed enthusiasm about the hire, noting that Conroy’s expertise in identifying and nurturing talent will bolster Furman’s competitive edge as the team looks to build on recent successes.
Conroy’s coaching journey includes a stint at Southeastern Louisiana University, where he rose to become the youngest Division I men’s basketball assistant in the nation, and a role at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kansas, where he helped guide a top‑10 nationally ranked team and saw eleven players move on to Division I programs.
Among his notable protégés are guards Tyrell Jones and Samuel Tabe, the latter surpassing 1,000 career points and earning Sun Belt Player of the Week honors, and Boogie Anderson, who earned All‑Southland First Team recognition under Conroy’s guidance. The coach also credits his father, former Furman assistant Ed Conroy, as a personal influence.
