The centerpiece of the upgrade is a stadium sized to accommodate a Major League Baseball game scheduled for August 13, when the Philadelphia Phillies meet the Minnesota Twins. Organizers expect the event, together with state tournaments and a Northwoods League team slated to begin play next summer, to generate between three and four million dollars in annual revenue.
Funding for the project combines a $10 million contribution from Musco Sports Lighting with state grants championed by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. The investment reflects a broader strategy to diversify income streams beyond merchandise and youth events, while preserving the iconic quarter‑mile‑away diamond that drew fans to the original movie location.
Some longtime supporters have voiced concerns that modern amenities might dilute the site’s nostalgic charm, yet Rahe argues that the upgrades will attract a wider audience without compromising the historic atmosphere. The effort also benefits from the involvement of former owners Don and Becky Lansing, who originally envisioned a lodge, and Denise Stillman, whose early dream of a youth sports complex is now materializing.
