Michael Osei-Bonsu Eyes Football Transition After Basketball Career

The former Missouri State basketball standout is pursuing a graduate degree while testing his mettle on the gridiron, drawing interest from several major programs.

A New Chapter

Michael Osei-Bonsu, a former All-Conference USA basketball player at Missouri State, is pursuing a graduate degree while attempting to join the football team as a defensive line and tight end candidate.

Standing 6-4 and weighing 285 pounds, he brings a rare combination of size and athleticism, including a 35-inch vertical leap, to a sport he has never played competitively.

Though lacking football experience, his physical profile has attracted attention from several programs, notably Florida, Illinois and Tulsa, who have expressed interest in evaluating his potential.

Osei-Bonsu points to pioneers such as Antonio Gates and George Fant, who transitioned from basketball to successful NFL careers, as inspiration, and he says former player George Fant has personally encouraged him to make the switch.

He believes that his athletic background gives him a better chance of reaching a professional football career than he ever had of securing an NBA spot.

The move continues a niche trend of basketball players crossing into football, a path also exemplified by the last Missouri State dual-sport athletes Jeremy Nicholson and Kyle Rausch from the 2000s.
