Baldwin, N.Y. – A rising star in American soccer, Sean Mahoney, has been awarded a scholarship that will take him to Cortland State University this fall.
A Scholarship With a Story
The Cortlandt ODP College Scholarship Program, administered by the Cortlandt Soccer Club, recognized Mahoney's seven-year journey through the Olympic Development Program, where he captained regional teams and earned national caps.
Mahoney's resume reads like a soccer ledger: he spent seven seasons with Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association's ODP, represented the East Region three times, and served as captain of that side in the previous year. In 2025 and 2026 he earned spots on the ODP national squad, a testament to his consistency and skill.
At Oceanside High School he was a three-year varsity starter, made the honor roll, and led the Sailors to a Nassau County Conference AAA championship last fall. The accolade culminated in his being named Class AAA player of the year, as well as All-County, All-State and All-Region honors.
Beyond the pitch, Mahoney's college essay highlighted the friendships forged in ODP and the trust coaches placed in him as a leader at state, regional and national levels. He recalled his favorite moment as playing for Juventus in Italy before a crowd of roughly 1,000 fans, a memory that still fuels his ambition.
Now, as he prepares to enroll at Cortland State University, Mahoney joins a program that blends academic rigor with athletic opportunity. The scholarship not only eases the financial burden but also validates the years of dedication he has invested in the sport.
Looking Ahead
Mahoney will study at Cortland State while continuing to train with the university's soccer team, hoping to translate his regional successes into new milestones. His future plans include leveraging the network he has built through ODP to explore professional pathways and community outreach.
