The signing follows a four‑player trade that sent Kelly to Jacksonville from the Toledo Walleye, a transaction that was finalized on February 23.
A Rookie Season to Remember
Kelly’s rookie year in the ECHL was nothing short of impressive. In 66 games he posted 50 points, breaking down into 25 goals and 25 assists, which placed him sixth across the league in total points. His impact extended into the postseason, where he contributed three goals in eight games with the Walleye, helping the club advance deep into the playoffs.
Beyond the numbers, Kelly’s versatility and work ethic stood out to coaches and teammates alike. His ability to generate scoring chances while maintaining strong defensive positioning made him a reliable asset on both ends of the ice, qualities that the Icemen hope will translate immediately to their roster.
Collegiate Foundations
Before turning professional, Kelly spent four seasons at Michigan State University, where he was a key contributor to two conference championship teams. Over his collegiate career he amassed 58 points, comprising 24 goals and 34 assists, showcasing a blend of offensive creativity and playmaking that caught the eye of ECHL scouts.
His development was further honed in the United States Hockey League, where he recorded 63 points (24 goals, 39 assists) with the Muskegon Lumberjacks from 2019 through 2021. That experience prepared him for the rigors of pro hockey and set the stage for his successful transition to the ECHL.
