Glenn Rivers to be Inducted into Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

The Marquette legend’s dual legacy as player and coach will be celebrated this August

A Legendary Career Comes Full Circle

On August 14‑15, 2024, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame will welcome Glenn Rivers, a Marquette University alumnus whose name has become synonymous with tenacious defense and relentless playmaking.

Rivers spent four seasons with the Golden Eagles from 1980 to 1983, earning first‑team Converse All‑American honors in 1982 and later having his No. 31 jersey retired by the university in 2004, a testament to his lasting impact on the program.

Selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the 1983 NBA Draft, Rivers went on to compile a 13‑year professional career in which he averaged 10.9 points, 5.7 assists and 3.0 rebounds, before transitioning to a coaching path that would bring him Coach of the Year honors in 2000 and an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008.

His coaching résumé also includes a place among the NBA’s top 15 coaches of all time, a distinction earned in 2021, and a tenure as a trustee emeritus at Marquette University, where he helped shape the institution’s strategic direction after joining the Board of Trustees in 2005.

Beyond statistics, Rivers is remembered for his defensive intensity and his ability to elevate teammates, traits that have defined his reputation both on the court and in the broader basketball community.
