Dusty May Leaves College Basketball for NBA’s Dallas Mavericks

After a championship and a brief but impactful college career, the coach cites transfer portal frustrations and administrative hurdles as he joins the Mavericks

A Historic Shift in Coaching

Dusty May, the architect of Michigan’s 2024 national championship run, announced this week that he will leave college basketball to become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, marking his NBA coaching debut just two months after guiding the Wolverines to the title.

May cited the growing complexity of the transfer portal and the unresolved challenges surrounding name, image and likeness (NIL) deals as the primary drivers behind his decision, saying the sport’s landscape has shifted in ways he cannot reconcile.

In a candid interview, he expressed disappointment with recent Big Ten meetings, noting that despite high expectations, no concrete solutions emerged to address the systemic issues facing college programs.

The Mavericks emerged as his choice after he praised the franchise’s executive stability, highlighting the track record of president Masai Ujiri and the collaborative relationship with general manager Mike Schmitz.

May also revealed that Michigan had offered him a contract extension, but he turned it down, stating, “I don’t think there is anything” that could keep him in college basketball under the current conditions.

He outlined a vision for change, proposing collective bargaining for coaches and the introduction of binding contracts to bring greater certainty to the sport, while also expressing a clear desire to win and remain in the NBA.
