A New Chapter for the Saints
Lucas Hunter has been appointed head coach of the Mt. Hood Community College Saints baseball program, taking over from Korey Kier, who led the team since 2022. A Portland native and graduate of Central Catholic High School, Hunter brings a lifelong connection to the region and a résumé that includes a 31st‑round selection by the Miami Marlins in the 2012 MLB draft and a collegiate career at the University of Portland.
Dr. Kim Hyatt, the college’s Athletic Director, highlighted Hunter’s energy, his deep understanding of player development, and the strong local ties that she believes will help the program thrive. She noted that his vision aligns closely with the college’s goals of student success, competitive excellence and community engagement.
Currently serving as program manager for Friends of Baseball, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding youth baseball and softball access across Oregon and Southwest Washington, Hunter draws on a family legacy of athletic achievement. His father, Brian Hunter, enjoyed a 12‑year Major League career highlighted by leading the American League in stolen bases in 1997.
The Saints community expressed gratitude for Korey Kier’s service, acknowledging his role in fostering accountability, resilience and personal growth among players. While wishing him continued success in future endeavors, they look forward to the fresh direction that Hunter’s leadership promises.
Hunter’s hiring marks the eighth head coaching appointment in the 58‑year history of Saints baseball, underscoring both the program’s stability and its willingness to evolve as it embraces new ambitions.
