Gardner‑Webb University is poised to enter the Mid‑Eastern Athletic Conference’s women’s flag football league for the 2026‑27 season, marking a notable milestone for the school’s athletic ambitions.
A Milestone for Women’s Sports
The conference, which already comprises eight Historically Black Colleges and Universities along the Atlantic seaboard, will welcome the Bison alongside Mississippi Valley State as associate members, bringing the total number of participants in the league’s flag football division to six.
Women’s flag football has been classified as an NCAA Emerging Sport, a designation that paves the way for a potential championship and, ultimately, an Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills praised the addition, emphasizing its role in expanding championship opportunities for women’s sports and highlighting the conference’s commitment to gender equity in athletics.
Dr. Alecia Shields‑Gadson, Director of Athletics at Mississippi Valley State, described the milestone as historic for student‑athletes and a boost for global recognition of the program.
Brendan Fahey, Vice President for Athletics at Gardner‑Webb, expressed excitement about the inaugural season and the chance to compete at a high level within a conference renowned for its tradition and community impact.
The development reflects a broader push to increase athletic opportunities for women, a trend that aligns with the growing visibility of flag football and its potential to become a staple of collegiate competition.
