Pride of the Southland Marching Band Preps for 2024 Football Kickoff

From rehearsals to stadium anthems, the band’s blend of tradition and new talent sets the tone for a season of sound

A Marching Tradition Revives Ahead of New Season

The Pride of the Southland Marching Band is deep in rehearsal as the University of Tennessee at Knoxville counts down to its first home game on September 5, 2024. The ensemble, known for filling Neyland Stadium with rousing chants, is preparing to once again become the auditory heartbeat of Volunteers football Saturdays.

Fans can expect the familiar swell of “Rocky Top” to punctuate the action, a tune that was performed nearly once every day during the band’s 2025 appearances across campus. The song has become a rallying cry that bridges generations of Volunteers supporters.

This year’s lineup features 415 musicians, with roughly three‑quarters of them identifying as non‑music majors hailing from 27 different states. Their diverse backgrounds bring a fresh energy to the field while still honoring the band’s long‑standing traditions.

Guiding the group is Director Michael Stewart, whose leadership has shaped the band’s modern sound, and student drum major Sydney Flenniken, who will lead the marching formation from the front. Together they blend precision with the spirited improvisation that defines each performance.

Beyond football, the band’s basketball counterparts have supported 44 games during the 2025 season, traveling a cumulative 1,772 miles to bring music to arenas across the region. Their itinerant schedule underscores the band’s role as a cultural ambassador for the university.

The effort extends beyond the field, reinforcing a connection between the university’s athletic identity and the broader community. As the band prepares to march onto the field, the anticipation reflects a shared excitement for a season where sound and sport intertwine.
