Roadrunners Ink Defenseman Cal Thomas to One-Year AHL Deal

The 23-year-old adds depth to Tucson’s blue line after a standout collegiate career

The Tucson Roadrunners have announced the signing of defenseman Cal Thomas to a one-year contract in the American Hockey League, marking the start of the 23-year-old’s professional career with the franchise.

A Collegiate Captain with Proven Defensive Skill

Thomas arrives after serving as captain of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers for the past two seasons, where he was recognized for both his on-ice leadership and academic excellence.

During the 2025-26 college campaign he posted five points — one goal and four assists — while logging ten penalty minutes across 31 games, ranking second on his team and eighth nationally with 76 blocked shots, including a personal best of eight at Ohio State.

Over four years at Minnesota he accumulated 30 points (three goals, 27 assists) and 30 penalty minutes in 136 appearances, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors in each of his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

Thomas also contributed to Minnesota’s Big Ten championship as a freshman in 2022-23, having previously compiled 27 points and 65 penalty minutes in 70 USHL games with the Chicago Steel and Sioux Falls Stampede. The Arizona Coyotes drafted him in the sixth round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

John Ferguson, general manager of the Roadrunners, expressed enthusiasm for Thomas’s defensive contributions, stating that his ability to protect the puck will be a valuable asset as the team looks to build on its recent successes.
