The Idaho Steelheads announced this week that defenseman Nick Young has agreed to a contract that will keep him with the franchise for the 2026‑27 season, adding a seasoned presence to the blue line.
A Return to Familiar Territory
Young, a Raleigh native who last appeared in the ECHL for a brief stint last year, returns after a four‑year collegiate career at Union College where he served as team captain in his senior season.
During his time at Union, the 24‑year‑old logged 144 appearances, contributing seven goals and 23 assists for a total of 30 points, while also taking on the responsibility of leading the squad on the ice.
His professional debut with the Steelheads came in 11 games last season, where he posted two goals, an assist and a plus‑minus rating of +1, showing a glimpse of the offensive upside he brings.
The upcoming campaign opens with a home game on October 23 against the Allen Americans, while the season kickoff is slated for October 16 in New Mexico, setting the stage for a competitive start.
Beyond the rink, Young’s connection to the region stretches back to his roots in North Carolina, a background that adds a personal narrative to his return.
