A New Era for UVA Athletics
UVA Athletics announced the appointment of Cody Gougler as its new deputy athletics director for external operations, filling the vacancy left by Tyler Jones, who is set to join Stanford’s athletics program as chief operating officer.
Gougler, who spent five years at Boise State University, will also serve as the sport supervisor for the Virginia Cavaliers football program, overseeing day‑to‑day operations and strategic initiatives.
In his expanded role, he will direct external units that include ticket sales, strategic communications, marketing, and fan engagement, while also acting as the primary liaison for Virginia Sports Properties.
Carla Williams, UVA’s athletics director, praised Gougler’s leadership, noting his expertise and the fresh perspective he brings to the department.
Jones, who steered UVA Football to a standout 2025 season and helped secure significant financial resources for the program, will transition to Stanford, where he will lead external operations for the Cardinal athletic department.
Gougler holds an undergraduate degree and an MBA from Southeastern Louisiana University, equipping him with a blend of academic and practical experience.
Beyond his operational duties, he will sit on the University Licensing Committee, contributing to broader institutional licensing strategies.
The move is being viewed as a continuation of the momentum built by Jones, with university officials confident that Gougler’s background will sustain and amplify the program’s recent successes.
