Capitals Lock In Liljegren for Two More Years
The Washington Capitals have secured defenseman Timothy Liljegren through a two‑year, $6.5 million contract extension, a move that underscores the club’s confidence in the Swedish blueliner’s upward trajectory.
Liljegren, who turned 27 during the 2025‑26 season, posted 11 points in 47 games while splitting time between Washington and San Jose, marking a career‑high ice time of 19:51 per game and ranking second among Sharks defensemen in blocked shots.
Acquired from the San Jose Sharks on March 6 in exchange for a fourth‑round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, the defenseman brings a blend of physicality and playmaking that complements the Capitals’ defensive core.
Beyond the NHL, Liljegren’s résumé includes silver medals with Sweden at the 2016 and 2018 World Championships, as well as formative experiences with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who originally drafted him 17th overall in 2017.
His 93 points in 311 career NHL games illustrate a steady climb, and the new deal positions him to contribute even more as Washington aims to contend for the Stanley Cup in the coming years.
