The Valparaiso University women's soccer team opened the 2026 campaign with a 2-0 loss on the road, falling to Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Illinois. The match marked the earliest regular-season opener in program history and represented the fifth consecutive year the two sides have met at the start of the season.
Valpo's defense was breached in the fourth minute when an own goal handed Eastern Illinois an early lead, forcing the Beacons to chase the game from the outset.
Despite the setback, the Beacons generated six shots on goal in the opening half, with Kiara Desiderio, Brylie Walos and Sofia Raco each carving out notable opportunities that highlighted an aggressive attacking approach.
Debuts and Defensive Adjustments
Freshmen Ivy Barba and Adria Schultz earned their first collegiate starts, while Eve Miller made her first career start and third appearance in her fourth season at Valpo. Goalkeeper Adria Schultz became the first freshman keeper to start on her debut since Nikki Coryell in 2021. Substitutes Sofia Raco, Sophia Bonacci and Kinly Rodell also made their collegiate appearances, adding depth to the young roster.
Eastern Illinois sealed the result with a second goal in the 88th minute, a 45-yard strike by Amelia Mundo that underscored the team's resilience but ultimately left Valpo empty-handed.
Coach Marovich praised the squad's defensive organization and mentality, noting the growth mindset and resilience displayed despite the loss and emphasizing the value of the experience for the developing group.
