A Storm Over Pearl
Heavy rain and lightning rolled across the Pearl area on May 20, prompting the Mississippi High School Activities Association to issue a rain delay during the championship series at Trustmark Park. The interruption came midway through the sixth inning of Game 2, when Pearl River Central held a 3‑1 lead over Salitllo.
Organizers said they would wait for the weather to clear, hoping to finish the delayed contest and then kick off Game 1 of the Presbyterian Christian versus Booneville matchup later in the afternoon. Earlier that morning, West Union had captured the 1A title with an 8‑3 victory over Taylorsville, a game that started at 10 a.m. and proceeded without incident.
Forecast and Tournament Outlook
The Weather Channel had predicted a 92 % chance of rain at 3 p.m., with the downpour expected to linger for about two hours. While the delay persisted, the MHSAA confirmed that two additional games were slated for later in the day: a 4 p.m. showdown between Presbyterian Christian and Booneville, followed by a 7 p.m. contest between Mooreville and Poplarville.
Trustmark Park had installed new infield turf earlier in the year, but the outfield remained vulnerable to standing water, a factor that could influence the timing of the resumed games. Officials emphasized that player safety would guide any further decisions as the tournament progressed toward its final rounds.
