From the Gridiron to the Globe
Brian Bilek spent more than a decade on the sidelines and fields of Crespi High School, first as a player and later as a coach, building a reputation that resonated through the school's football culture.
Today he channels that same energy into an environmental studies program that takes students on international expeditions, using the outdoors as a classroom for climate change and planetary stewardship.
The curriculum blends physical challenges with scientific inquiry, inviting participants to hike remote trails, measure air quality and discuss sustainability while fostering teamwork among athletes and non‑athletes alike.
Many of the youngsters who join the trips are already involved in school sports, allowing Bilek to bridge his two passions and show how competition and conservation can coexist.
Through hands‑on projects — from planting native vegetation to analyzing local ecosystems — students gain a visceral understanding of environmental issues that textbooks often cannot convey.
Bilek’s initiative illustrates how a high school coach can expand his influence beyond the locker room, shaping the next generation of informed, active citizens on a global stage.
