Alpharetta’s Planning Commission has given the green light to a sweeping redevelopment of the North Point Mall site, envisioning a mixed-use district anchored by a 20,000-seat hockey arena.
The project, championed by NHL veteran Anson Carter and designed by architect Frank Gehry, aims to lure a third NHL franchise to the Atlanta metro area, capitalizing on a fan base that remains the region’s largest for the sport.
A Strategic Location and Visionary Design
Alpharetta’s central position along Georgia Highway 400 and the planned MARTA expansion provide the transportation backbone needed to serve fans from across metro Atlanta, while the surrounding Forsyth County initiative underscores a coordinated effort to bring NHL hockey back to the state.
Mayor Jim Gilvin has voiced strong municipal support, citing improved transit access and the economic boost a modern arena would bring to local businesses and tourism.
Gehry’s design goes beyond the rink, incorporating practice facilities, an outdoor stadium for soccer and lacrosse, and public spaces that could host concerts and community events, positioning the venue as a multi-purpose hub.
With a capacity that would make it the second-largest arena in the NHL after Montreal’s Bell Centre, the facility is poised to meet both league standards and the ambitious expectations of a market that has seen two franchises relocate in the past.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has acknowledged that Atlanta’s market has evolved since the Flames and Thrashers departed, noting heightened interest and the strategic advantages of a centrally located, state-of-the-art venue.
The redevelopment also benefits from the involvement of ASE Group, a local firm providing engineering and consulting services, ensuring that the project aligns with regional planning objectives and financial feasibility.
