Mt. Hood Community College announced this week that Lucas Hunter will take over as head coach of the Saints baseball program, replacing Korey Kier, who guided the team since 2022.
A Portland Legacy Returns
A Portland native, Hunter graduated from Central Catholic High School before embarking on a playing career that began when the Miami Marlins selected him in the 31st round of the 2012 MLB draft. He later refined his skills at the University of Portland, where he earned a degree while remaining deeply connected to the city’s baseball roots. His father, Brian Hunter, a 12‑year MLB veteran who led the American League in stolen bases in 1997, adds another layer of baseball heritage to his family name.
Beyond his playing days, Hunter now serves as program manager for Friends of Baseball, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding youth baseball opportunities across Oregon and Southwest Washington. In that role he has helped coordinate summer leagues, mentorship programs, and equipment drives that keep the sport accessible to underserved communities.
Dr. Kim Hyatt, MHCC Athletic Director, praised Hunter’s blend of energy, player‑development expertise, and ties to the local baseball community. “Lucas brings a fresh perspective grounded in the values we cherish at Mt. Hood,” Hyatt said in a statement.
The college also took the opportunity to thank Korey Kier for his tenure, highlighting the culture of accountability and personal growth he cultivated during his time at the helm.
Looking Ahead
With Hunter at the helm, the Saints aim to build on recent successes and deepen their engagement with the Portland baseball ecosystem. His vision emphasizes not only on‑field performance but also the holistic development of each student‑athlete, ensuring that the program remains a launchpad for both athletic and personal achievement.
