From the outset, Kent State controlled the tempo, maintaining superior possession and generating a steady stream of attacking moves that kept the Vikings on the back foot.

Although Cleveland State managed six shots on target compared with four from the opposition, the Golden Flashes struck first in the 30th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick that found the back of the net.
True Benshoff, who attempted three shots in the half, had two of those efforts on target, but the team could not convert any of the chances into goals.
