Crusaders Aim to Build on Recent Success
The Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders are gearing up for what could be their most promising campaign yet, entering their fourth season under head coach Jeff Ashby. After a dramatic turnaround that saw the team rise from a 2‑7 record to a Class C2 runner‑up finish, the program is now viewed as a consistent contender in the state’s football landscape.
The foundation of that success was laid over three years, during which Ashby instilled a culture of discipline and hard work that resonated with players and fans alike. The offseason has been marked by intense training sessions, strategic drills, and a collective desire to replicate the electric atmosphere of the state championship game that left a lasting imprint on the squad.
Central to the team's outlook is the departure of several standout seniors, including Grayson Sack, Jack Alberts, Connor Haney, and Thomas Schneider, who contributed heavily both on offense and defense. Their exits create opportunities for younger talent, most notably four‑star prospect Owen Price, who is expected to shoulder a larger role in the upcoming season.
Senior offensive lineman Will Maser has voiced confidence that the team's preparation is ahead of schedule compared to previous years, citing improved conditioning and a deeper understanding of Ashby's schemes. Likewise, middle linebacker and running back Thomas Schneider highlighted the noticeable progress made during the summer, noting that the momentum built in practice has translated into a sharper, more cohesive unit.
Looking Ahead
With a blend of seasoned seniors, emerging prospects, and a coaching staff that has proven its ability to maximize potential, the Crusaders enter the new season with a clear vision. Fans and alumni alike are hopeful that the combination of strategic preparation, heightened motivation, and talented newcomers will finally deliver the long‑awaited title.
