A Teen's Second Chance
During a weekend basketball game in Bensonhurst, 16‑year‑old Jack McMurrer suddenly collapsed, his heart stopping mid‑play. The crowd fell silent as teammates rushed to his side, but it was the arrival of FDNY units that turned a potential tragedy into a story of survival.
Heroes in Uniform
Paramedic Sam Andrews and firefighter Kendall Williams led the emergency response, performing rapid chest compressions and delivering a shock that restored McMurrer’s heartbeat. Their cool‑headed coordination and precise use of a defibrillator bought critical minutes that ultimately saved his life.
McMurrer was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery and now lives with a defibrillator implanted in his chest. Against the odds, he has returned to the court, dribbling and shooting with the same vigor that earned him a spot on the local league.
A Grateful Reunion
At a recent ceremony, McMurrer embraced the men and women who had rescued him, thanking them for their bravery. His father, Tom McMurrer, praised the paramedics’ composure and the seamless teamwork that turned a frightening moment into a celebration of life.
The event also brought together six other individuals who had experienced serious heart trouble, including a jogger who collapsed on the West Side Highway and an off‑duty police officer who suffered cardiac arrest while spending time with his son. Each survivor shared a moment of gratitude with the FDNY crew that had become their lifeline.
