Defensive Foundations
The 2026 campaign begins with a clear directive: solidify a back line that returns its core from the previous season. Seniors Jacob Annis and Abram Daniel will anchor the defense, joined by Grayson Farrar and Fernando Guzman, while sophomore Curtis Gayman is being evaluated for a center‑back role.
Last year the squad finished 7‑15, dropping eight games in overtime and through penalty kicks. Those close contests highlighted both resilience and the need for a more consistent defensive spine.
Coach John Black has framed the upcoming season around effort rather than raw talent, insisting that dedication in training will translate into on‑field improvements.
Midfield Evolution and Freshman Impact
Junior midfielders Sebastian Aldrete and Eduardo Pureto are slated to assume larger responsibilities, orchestrating play and supporting the attack. Freshman Cooper Ackerman has impressed during summer workouts and could see significant offensive minutes early in the year.
Sophomore Matthew Bayless, who saw limited freshman action, is also pushing for more playing time, while versatile Gustavo Villanueva may operate as a winger, midfielder or right back depending on tactical needs.
The goalkeeper position remains open, with Alex Dunaway and Zach White competing for the starting spot. Their performances will be crucial in preserving the defensive stability the coaching staff envisions.
Younger players, including freshmen Kevin Mejia and Jimmy Daniel, are battling for roster spots against upperclassmen, adding depth and competition across the squad.
The season opener is scheduled for August 28, when the Cardinals host Hillcrest and Cassville in a home tournament, marking the first test of their newly emphasized defensive approach.
