The Hillcrest Hornets finished the previous campaign with a 5‑15 record, a result that left the program searching for a new direction. Only two of last year’s starters return, and the team must replace much of its offensive firepower.
Head coach Roy Hardy, now in his eighth season, is entering the year with a clear vision. He notes that the squad has shown marked improvement in soccer IQ and has cut down on the late‑game lapses that cost them dearly in several close defeats.
Among the returning veterans, forward Eli Allen, midfielder Elizaul Lucena and versatile defender Soner Sen will anchor the attack. Their familiarity with the system should provide a steady backbone as the team looks to increase its goal tally and assist numbers.
Newcomers Chaku Hassan and Seth Romero are expected to make immediate impacts. Hassan, who missed much of last season due to injury, is eager to reclaim his offensive role, while Romero, who started a handful of games, is poised to earn a more prominent spot in the lineup.
The Hornets also face an open competition for the starting goalkeeper position, with junior Noah Tindle emerging as the leading candidate to guard the net.
A New Chapter Begins
Preseason training kicks off on Aug. 24 in Willard, and the first test will come on Aug. 27 when the Hornets travel to face Cassville. Their home opener is slated for Sept. 3 against Parkview, giving the team an early chance to showcase the progress made during the summer.
