On August 14 the Oahe Hockey Association will gather fans and community leaders in Fort Pierre for an evening dedicated to supporting the Ice Barn’s transformation. The event marks a pivotal moment for local hockey, combining celebration with a clear call to action for the $3.1 million renovation project.
The Capitalize on the Future campaign seeks to convert the aging Ice Barn into a game‑ready venue. Planned upgrades include expanded locker rooms, modern concessions, improved parking and upgraded spectator seating, enabling the facility to host tournaments and year‑round youth programs.
Honoring a Legacy
Brian Rafalski, a three‑time Stanley Cup champion and member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, will share reflections from his 11‑year NHL career and discuss how community support during the COVID‑era shaped today’s hockey environment. His insights aim to inspire both players and volunteers who keep the sport thriving in Pierre.
A Rising Star from Pierre
Carter Sanderson, the first South Dakota player ever selected in the NHL draft, will recount his journey from local rinks to the Pittsburgh Penguins system. He will highlight how year‑round access to the Ice Barn accelerated his development and why he advocates for similar opportunities for the next generation of players.
The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. with doors opening, followed by a 6:30 p.m. session that includes remarks from association leaders, a tribute to longtime volunteers and a Q&A with the two guests. Tickets are $50 per person or $350 for a table of eight, offering fans a direct way to contribute to the renovation while enjoying an intimate hockey gathering.
