The Atlanta Gladiators have announced the signing of Stephen Calisti, a 27‑year‑old defenseman, to a contract that will carry him through the 2026‑27 ECHL season. The move reunites the blue‑liner with a franchise that has been searching for stability on the back end, and his return is being framed as a strategic addition as the team eyes a playoff push.
College breakthrough at Brock University
During the 2025‑26 campaign Calisti led all Brock University defensemen with 18 points, posting six goals and 12 assists in 28 games. That performance marked the culmination of a fifth season of eligibility and set new collegiate career highs in both goals and total points, underscoring his growth as a reliable offensive contributor from the point.
Ontario roots and junior pedigree
Born in Etobicoke, Ontario, Calisti spent his formative years in the province before attending Ontario Tech University from 2020 to 2024. Over three seasons he accumulated 34 points (nine goals, 25 assists) in 65 games, a span that included a standout junior career with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, where he recorded 83 points (16 goals, 67 assists) in 107 appearances.
A year away, a year back
After completing his university tenure, Calisti briefly explored European hockey, suiting up for the Guildford Flames in the Elite Ice Hockey League. He then returned to North America, logging stints with the Adirondack Thunder and the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL before taking a hiatus during the 2024‑25 season. His comeback marks the first time since that break that he will again wear an ECHL jersey.
Calisti's blend of size, defensive responsibility and emerging offensive skill set offers the Gladiators a versatile option on the third pairing. Coaches note that his familiarity with the league's pace and his experience against AHL‑affiliated talent could accelerate his integration and provide depth as the team navigates a competitive schedule.
