A Tough Start in Montgomery
The Alabama State University women's soccer team opened its 2026 campaign with a 4‑0 loss to Southern Mississippi at the ASU Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Alabama. The match, played under bright afternoon lights, marked the first test for second‑year head coach Alicia Wilson's revamped squad.
Southern Mississippi struck early, finding the net in the third minute, but the Hornets managed to keep the damage limited through the first half. Despite being outshot, Alabama State's defense held firm enough to keep the score within reach.
After the break, the Lady Hornets tightened up, forcing three yellow cards on the opposition and restricting Southern Mississippi to just five shots. Goalkeeper Slater Copeland made three saves, two of them in the second half, while the midfield began to dictate play.
Coach Wilson praised the team's resilience, highlighting forward Serenity Safeeullah's late‑game passes that created several scoring chances. Although the offense still struggled to convert, the passing accuracy showed signs of growth.
The Hornets will look to rebound when they host Presbyterian College on August 16, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the same venue. The upcoming clash offers a chance to translate defensive improvements into a positive result.
