A rocky start for the Gators
The Florida Gators opened their season with a 4-3 loss to Central Florida at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex in Orlando. Despite dominating early possession, the Gators could not hold onto their lead, as UCF’s late surge turned a tight contest into a defeat that marked the team’s first loss of the campaign.
First‑year head coach Nick Zimmerman made his sideline debut, overseeing a squad that featured 18 newcomers, among them freshmen Iori Watanabe and Mia Gray. The lineup included several former Mississippi State players who scored all three of Florida’s goals, but the team’s chemistry was still finding its footing.
The match began explosively, with Zoe Main striking in the first minute after a short UCF goal kick. Adia Symmonds added a second goal in the 18th minute from a corner kick, giving Florida a 2‑0 edge. However, UCF’s Naomi Clark equalised in the 25th minute, and three minutes into the second half Ella Holloran tied the game at 2‑2.
Clark’s impact did not stop there; she struck again to put UCF ahead 3‑2. A penalty converted by Gabi Berchon extended the lead to 4‑2, but a handball in the box in the final minute gifted Florida a consolation goal, sealing a 4‑3 final score.
The game was marred by injuries, most notably to Symmonds, who was forced out after a collision. Addy Hess and Montelene Dymond created several chances, while Watanabe’s foul on Berchon resulted in the decisive penalty. Despite the setbacks, Zimmerman emphasized that the team will use the experience to refine their approach through film study and practice ahead of their next home fixture against Coastal Carolina.
