Wooster High School football eyes bounce‑back after 1‑9 season

Coach David Tietjen and a sophomore‑heavy roster aim for a turnaround in the 4A North league

Wooster High School’s football team is gearing up for its 2026 season after a challenging 1‑9 record in 2025, a year that left the Colts with a young, sophomore‑laden roster.

A young squad ready to grow

Head coach David Tietjen, now in his second year at the helm, believes steady improvement is within reach and has set a target of reaching a .500 record or better.

The offense will be anchored by sophomore quarterback Ikaika Jacobs, who transitioned from running back last season, while veteran running back Mason Ottervanger is expected to carry the bulk of the rushing load.

Defensively, Anthony Benavides and Xavier Glover return as key contributors, bringing experience and leadership to a unit that lost lineman Richard Vea to graduation.

With a schedule that includes matchups against Lowry, South Tahoe, McQueen and other regional foes, the team hopes to translate its offseason work into four or five wins, aiming to climb out of the bottom of the 4A North standings.
