A New Era for Liverpool
A consortium headed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co‑founder Eduardo Saverin has agreed to purchase a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club, a transaction that values the Premier League side at roughly $6 billion.
The agreement, announced on Wednesday, also brings British‑Indian entrepreneur Amit Bhatia into the fold; Bhatia, whose family connection to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal’s daughter adds a notable dimension, will hold a stake exceeding 30 percent of the club.
Liverpool’s recent history reads like a trophy cabinet: the club captured the English top‑flight title in 2020 and again in 2023, matching Manchester United’s record of 20 league championships, and added six European crowns in 2019, the most of any English team.
The deal is being finalized with Fenwick Sports Group (FSG), the current ownership group that acquired the club for $400 million in 2010, under a definitive agreement that paves the way for the new investors to join the board.
While the Premier League’s financial regulations tether club spending to on‑field earnings and player sales, the consortium’s primary aim is to accelerate commercial growth, expanding Liverpool’s global brand and improving profitability.
Amit Bhatia, a veteran of an 18‑year ownership stint at Queens Park Rangers, brings additional expertise and networks that the new owners hope will translate into richer sponsorship deals and heightened marketability.
