A New Chapter for the Great Danes
The University at Albany’s women’s soccer program is gearing up for the 2026 campaign, entering the season with a blend of experience and fresh faces. Head coach Sade Ayinde, now in her fifth year at the helm, believes the mix of returning standouts and eight new recruits gives the team a realistic shot at climbing the America East standings.
Last season the Great Danes finished 2‑13‑2, highlighted by a win over NJIT, and they will rely on a core that includes Flo Bartholomai and Tamia Nelson, the two leading goal scorers from 2025. Goalkeeper Claudia Volino, a redshirt sophomore who ranked 21st nationally in save percentage last year, returns between the posts with 1,530 minutes of action under her belt.
Adding to the mix are four transfers — Alexa Fritz, Kiara Levac, Maddie Eddy and Liyah Menilek — who bring new energy, while the freshman class features Oluchi Njoku, Ava Phillips, Lila Algarin and Julianna Ortega. Lila Algarin also earned national team experience with the Dominican Republic’s U20 side, underscoring the international flavor of the roster.
The schedule opens on August 16 with a home showdown against Boston University, followed by three more non‑conference matches on campus before America East play begins on September 20. All home games will be streamed on ESPN+, giving fans easy access to every minute of the action.
Beyond the regular season, the team will compete in the 2026 America East Women’s Soccer Championships in November, a tournament that could further cement the Great Danes’ rise. With a balanced lineup and a clear coaching vision, UAlbany hopes to translate early momentum into a postseason berth.
