John McElaney is set to join the Alaska Nanooks hockey program as an assistant coach, bringing a blend of analytical insight and on‑ice development expertise.
Head coach Erik Largen highlighted the move as a strategic step to strengthen the team’s recruiting pipeline and overall game planning for the upcoming 2026‑27 season.
A Journey From Colby to the Canadiens
McElaney arrives after a season as an assistant at Colby College, where he managed talent identification, player evaluation and admissions coordination, responsibilities that align with the Nanooks’ focus on building a competitive forward group.
His professional trajectory also includes a hockey operations internship with the Montreal Canadiens, during which he contributed scouting reports and leveraged Sportlogiq analytics to refine player assessments.
Focus on Recruiting and Player Development
A graduate of Colby with a bachelor’s degree in sociology/economics and a master’s in management from Babson F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business, McElaney captained the Colby team and earned All‑NESCAC honors, underscoring his leadership credentials.
Beyond the rink, he volunteers with Team Impact and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, reflecting a commitment to community engagement that aligns with the Nanooks’ broader mission.
In his new role, McElaney will direct recruiting strategy, conduct video analysis and shape player evaluation for the forward line, adding depth to a staff already focused on tactical innovation.
