A New Chapter for Marshall Football
The Thundering Herd will kick off the 2026 season on September 5 when they travel to State College to face Penn State. It marks the third meeting in program history and the first since 1930, setting a nostalgic tone for a team eager to rewrite its recent narrative.
A year after missing bowl eligibility for the first time since 2016, Marshall finds itself positioned third in the Sun Belt East Division according to the 2026 preseason coaches poll. The placement reflects both the program’s recent struggles and the optimism surrounding a revamped roster.
Second‑year head coach Tony Gibson will guide a squad that returns five All‑Sun Belt selections from the previous season. Gibson’s tenure has been marked by a focus on continuity, and his staff has retained much of the core that finished 5‑7 a year ago.
At the heart of the offense is redshirt senior quarterback Carlos Del Rio‑Wilson, who earned preseason Offensive Player of the Year honors. Del Rio‑Wilson shattered a 43‑year‑old record for quarterback rushing yards, finishing the 2025 campaign with 660 yards on the ground, and he joins an elite group of FBS signal‑callers who have amassed 2,000 passing yards, 600 rushing yards and a 65 percent completion rate.
Preseason Outlook
The schedule ahead features a blend of home and away contests, including matchups with Middle Tennessee, Missouri State, Gardner‑Webb, South Alabama and ULM, as well as a slate of Sun Belt rivals such as Coastal Carolina, Old Dominion, Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, Georgia State and James Madison. Each game presents an opportunity for the Herd to climb back into postseason contention.
Fans can also look forward to seeing other returning standouts, including preseason All‑Sun Belt selections Daytione Smith and Jalen Slappy, who will bolster both the receiving corps and the secondary.
Preseason accolades have already placed Del Rio‑Wilson among the most watched players in the conference, while the coaching staff’s confidence in Gibson’s system suggests a deliberate strategy to maximize the quarterback’s dual‑threat capabilities. The combination of experience on both sides of the ball and a challenging but navigable schedule sets the stage for a potentially transformative year.
