A Strategic Transfer
Wendell Gregory, a defensive standout who earned Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year honors after recording 12 tackles for a loss and four sacks as a freshman at Oklahoma State, is set to continue his college career at Kansas State.
The Wildcats identified Gregory as a premier target in the transfer portal and secured his commitment early, a pursuit that was amplified by his former running backs coach, Cory Patterson, who encouraged the player to visit the Manhattan campus.
During that visit, Gregory was impressed by new head coach Collin Klein, whose vision for the program and emphasis on disciplined defense resonated with the player, as well as by the defensive coordinator’s aggressive scheme that promises more pass‑rushing opportunities.
Gregory’s primary motivation, he says, is to contribute to a winning culture rather than chase individual accolades, a mindset that aligns with the team’s ambition to build on recent progress and open the season against Nicholls on September 5.
Coaches and analysts expect the addition of Gregory to fortify a defense that has been seeking a spark, and his experience could prove pivotal as the Wildcats look to translate early promise into a sustained winning campaign.
