A Trip That Went Beyond Basketball
The San José State men’s basketball squad arrived in Costa Rica for a five‑day tour that combined competition, adventure and community service. Coach said the trip was designed to test the team’s chemistry before the upcoming season while giving players a chance to experience a new culture.
In the opening match, senior forward Joey Chammaa erupted for 31 points, adding five assists and three steals. His performance set the tone for a series of games that would push the Spartans against the Costa Rica National Team.
The second contest saw Rokiem Green deliver a 28‑point outing, shooting 10‑for‑14 from the floor, while sophomore Mookie Cook contributed 17 points and nine rebounds, underscoring the depth of the roster.
Beyond the hardwood, the team traded sneakers for paddles, tackling white‑water rapids and soaring through zip‑line courses that threaded the country’s lush rainforests. The adrenaline‑filled outings forged bonds that could not be replicated in practice.
Mid‑trip, the Spartans visited a local orphanage, spending afternoons playing games and chatting with children. The exchange left a lasting impression, reminding the players of the broader impact of sport.
Reflecting on the experience, the coaching staff highlighted how the blend of competition, adventure and service cultivated trust, communication and brotherhood — key ingredients they expect to carry into the new season.
