A Strategic Rebuild for the Scarlet Knights
Rutgers entered the 2025 season with high expectations, climbing to No. 13 in the national rankings before a late‑season slump dropped them just outside the Big Ten Tournament field. The disappointment prompted head coach Jim McElderry to overhaul the squad, culminating in a recruiting class of eleven newcomers who bring a variety of playing styles and backgrounds.
The centerpiece of the influx is Hector Criado, a Madrid‑born center back who logged 54 appearances in Spain’s Tercera División RFEF across the fourth and fifth tiers. Joining him is German forward Noah Hannawald, who netted eight goals in the fifth‑tier Oberliga Rheinland‑Pfalz/Saar and is expected to raise the team’s professional standards on his American debut.
Between the posts, Julian Chapman arrives with dual MLS academy credentials from the New England Revolution and NY Red Bulls, while Mexican‑born goalkeeper Rafa Ponce de Leon, who helped Northwestern post the program’s best defensive record, adds depth and leadership. Midfield will be anchored by New Zealand native William Pierce, whose graduate season promises contributions both offensively and defensively.
Academic excellence accompanies athletic talent, exemplified by left‑footed defender Brian Nascimento, who maintains a 3.8 GPA, and Ugandan forward Pius Ssebulime, a Buddu Sazza champion who previously shone in the CAF‑scouted youth circuit. Additional pieces include Polish midfielder Jan Ziewiec, who scored in last fall’s NCAA Tournament for Hofstra, and Zach Mastrodimos, a product of the Philadelphia Union U‑18 MLS Next Academy who captained the 2024 MLS GA Cup champions.
The class also features Abubaker Mayanja, a CAF Confederations Cup scorer and Uganda U‑18 top scorer, as well as Charlie Kitch, whose twin brother Andrew already wears the Scarlet Knights’ colors. Andrew’s presence, along with Charlie’s recent CAA Championship experience at Elon, adds a familial connection that could prove pivotal in chemistry and on‑field cohesion.
Rutgers will open the 2026 schedule with road matches against American on August 20 and a home clash with Sacred Heart on August 28 at Yurcak Field. The early slate offers a chance to gel quickly, and the coaching staff believes the blend of international experience, professional exposure, and scholarly discipline will translate into a competitive postseason push.
