Spire Motorsports is gearing up for the Coca‑Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the longest race on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar, which will broadcast live on Sunday, May 24 at 6 p.m. EDT on Prime.
The team will field three Chevrolet Camaro ZL1s, each painted in special Memorial Day liveries that pay tribute to fallen service members. Daniel Suárez’s No. 7 car carries the name of Sgt. Martin Anthony Lugo Jr., Michael McDowell’s No. 71 honors Corporal Eddie Wade Forrest II, and Carson Hocevar’s No. 77 celebrates Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer Mark Cardillo.
For Suárez, the race marks a chance to build on a solid track record at Charlotte, where he has posted a best finish of sixth in 2017 and averages a 15th‑place result across 11 starts. McDowell, fresh off back‑to‑back career‑best finishes at Watkins Glen and Dover, enters the event with momentum after a seventh‑place finish in May 2025, the team’s highest placement at the track to date. Hocevar, who was contending for the win last year before an engine failure, now sits seventh in the points standings with a win and several top‑fives to his credit.
Endurance and stage strategy
The 600‑mile format tests both car durability and driver stamina, featuring four stages and the opportunity to earn extra stage points that can influence the playoff picture. Spire’s historical performance at Charlotte includes 15 starts with a single top‑10 and three top‑20 finishes, the best result being a seventh‑place finish by McDowell in May 2025.
A tribute that resonates
Beyond the competition, the Memorial Day weekend provides a poignant backdrop for the tribute, linking the drivers’ efforts to longstanding traditions of honoring the military. Fans can expect an emotionally charged atmosphere as the liveries spotlight the sacrifices of Lugo, Forrest and Cardillo, reinforcing the series’ connection to the broader community.
