The Winthrop women's soccer team opened its season with a 4‑2 loss to Western Carolina on Thursday night, dropping the Eagles' opening record to 0‑1.
Lindsay Sheets broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, and Monssi Avila‑Gutierrez extended the lead eight minutes later, but Western Carolina answered back two minutes after Avila‑Gutierrez's goal to cut the margin to 2‑1.
Samantha Vibberts leveled the score with a first‑half penalty, while Western Carolina's goalkeeper Amara Yetka made several key saves to keep the match tightly contested.
Winthrop struggled in the second half, missing several corner‑kick opportunities that could have restored the lead, allowing the opposition to take control.
Freshmen Make Their Mark
The debut of freshmen Kinsie Kulig, Lila Bowers, Aubrey Earman and Mia Ruffalo injected youthful energy into the squad, and Ruffalo capped the night with four saves between the posts.
Looking ahead, Winthrop will host UT‑Chattanooga on Sunday at 5 p.m., streaming live on ESPN+, as the team seeks to rebound from its opening defeat.
